Marcus Trescothick has pinpointed Pete Trego and James Hildreth as England players in the making as he prepares to help Somerset towards an elusive LV County Championship.

The former England believes an international call-up is within reach for 23-year-old star batsman Hildreth, who hit a century in only his second county championship game and has impressed all-comers.

Trego, 26, scored 800 runs and took 31 wickets for Somerset to help them to promotion from Division One last season.

Trescothick told ECBtv: “Everyone talks about Justin [Langer] and myself, but we also have Neil Edwards and James Hildreth in our top order. It’s only a matter of time before James plays for England.

“Pete was outstanding last year. If he has another good year he could put himself in contention for England’s one-day squad. The challenge is there, he’s done a tour for the MCC in the winter.”

Trescothick has now devoted his time to his county, and believes Somerset could create history in winning their first county championship if they can beat the established favourites.

“The championship was great for us last year,” he added.

“If we progress this year and continue to play the same sort of cricket we played last year we give ourselves a real chance of the First Division title.

“The championship is a little bit harder this year. We’ve got to beat the likes of Lancashire, Yorkshire and Sussex and possibly play 10% better than our best at times."

He was keen to stress the importance of veteran swing bowler Andy Caddick, who took 75 wickets last season, but is suffering from some back problems in the run-up to the season.

“Caddick was the main difference for us last year. He’s had a back operation in the winter, but we must make sure he’s fit for the start of the campaign against Lancashire," Trescothick concluded.
