Club Development Planning

A guide for cricket clubs and professional sports development officers

Introduction

The concept of ‘club development planning’ or ‘business planning’ is growing ever more important within community club cricket.

Club Development PlanningA club development plan documents the objectives, actions and costs associated with the development needs of a cricket club.

Without a club development plan, it will become increasingly difficult for community cricket clubs to attract support, time, resources and investment into their club.

In simple terms a club development plan demonstrates why a cricket club wants support, time, resources and investment and what the cricket club is going to do as a result of this investment.

From 2006 the club development planning process across community cricket will be standardised for clubs who are seeking to attract support, time, resources and investment from the ECB. Those clubs will be required to write and submit their club development plan in a specified format, which will be detailed later in this Club Development Planning section.

To assist community cricket clubs, Cricket Development Managers and sports development professionals the ECB have developed a Club Development Planning Resource to support clubs writing their club development plan.

The club development planning resource is not only accessible to those community cricket clubs seeking support, time, resources and investment. The resource is accessible to all community cricket clubs across England and Wales and we actively encourage clubs to utilise the resource when writing their club development plan to save re-inventing the wheel.

Non-affiliated clubs may wish the use this resource. For further support (i.e. ECB/County Cricket Board staff time and expertise) we would encourage all clubs to affiliate to the ECB - via your local Cricket Development Manager at your County Board.

The resource consists of three documents:

  • a Club Template: A standardised template that club volunteers will use to write their club development plan
  • a Completed Example: An example of a completed club development plan that can be used as a guide for cricket clubs and sports development professionals
  • a Professional Guide: An in-depth step-by-step guide for Cricket Development Managers and sports development professionals to support clubs through the club development planning process. A manual of questions, examples and explanations. The Professional Guide can also be used by clubs as a ‘self-help’ guide
