Simon Jones suffered another injury setback which ruled him out of taking any further part in Glamorgan's LV County Championship clash with Northamptonshire at Colwyn Bay.

A slight calf strain will also prevent the 28-year-old from playing in the NatWest Pro40 match against Somerset on Sunday.

The England fast bowler will have a fitness test on Monday with a view to playing in the four-day game against Somerset at Cardiff starting the following day.

There was further frustration on the field for Glamorgan, who saw a magnificent double century from David Sales completely transform the contest during the third day.

Down a bowler, Glamorgan could not prevent Sales from scoring 219 - an innings which lasted six minutes short of six hours, from 247 balls with 28 fours and six sixes - to help Northamptonshire save the follow-on.

Glamorgan went into their second innings possessing a 78-run advantage but were soon 49 for four before ending the third day on 60 for four, an overall lead of 138.

It was the seventh time Sales has passed 200 in his career, and was especially important given that, at 144 for seven on the second day, Northamptonshire seemed destined to follow on.

But Sales helped add 243 for the last three wickets, including 145 with Graeme White, who was playing his first championship game of the season.

Sales was dropped on 113 by Robert Croft, who failed to hold on to a sharp chance at first slip off Andrew Davies, the pick of the Glamorgan attack.

Making the most of his life, Sales plundered 23 off one Dean Cosker over, including three sixes and a four, as Glamorgan gradually lost the initiative.

Cosker did have the consolation of bowling White but in the 91st over Northamptonshire passed the follow-on figure at 316 for eight.

After Richard Logan was the victim of a brilliant diving catch by Mark Wallace off Davies, Jason Brown shared a 70-run partnership for the final wicket with Sales.

Glamorgan's second innings never really got off the ground as batsmen came and went. Gareth Rees was bowled via an inside edge attempting an injudicious drive and Wallace pulled a slow long hop straight to short backward square.

Brown got in on the act by claiming the wickets of Dan Cherry, who edged to second slip, and David Hemp, caught behind, before Richard Grant and Ryan Watkins guided Glamorgan to the close.
