Glamorgan suffer again

Mark Wallace

Northamptonshire dominated the first day of their LV County Championship clash against basement-side Glamorgan despite Mark Wallace’s gritty hundred for the visitors.

Wallace hit 120 from 209 deliveries including 18 fours, five of which came off the bowling of England star Monty Panesar, as they recovered from 87 for six to end on 280 all out.

Lance Klusener was the pick of the home side's bowlers claiming figures of 5-40, with Northants finishing the day on 61 without loss in reply.

David Hemp’s decision to bat first was put in doubt when Gareth Rees was trapped leg before wicket by Klusener for his fifth duck of the season in the third over.

Richard Logan struck eight overs later to dismiss William Bragg in the same fashion for 13 having survived an appeal from the seamer the previous delivery.

Hemp had a lucky escape on nine in the 14th over when he found the gap between second and third slip for four.

However, a ball later the Glamorgan skipper was clean bowled as he attempted to drive Wigley through the off-side, leaving the visitors 48 for three.

The paceman claimed his second wicket of the day when he snared Ben Wright lbw, again for a duck, two overs later.

And Richard Grant's resistance for 34 ended in the 20th over when he edged former South Africa international Klusener to Irish wicket-keeper Niall O'Brien.

Alex Wharf became the all-rounder’s third wicket of the day as a sorry Glamorgan replicated the form that has seen them rooted to the foot of the table, limping to 87 for six at lunch.

After the interval a seventh-wicket stand of 54 between Wallace and Robert Croft saw Glamorgan ease away from danger.

But former England international Croft departed for 20 when Klusener and O’Brien combined again in the 48th over.

Wallace remained defiant and passed his half-century in the 50th over, only to be dropped by Andrew Crook two overs later having added one to his score.

The 25-year-old and Dean Cosker put on Glamorgan's highest eighth-wicket partnership of the season of 53 before Cosker (14) was trapped lbw by Jason Brown in the 69th over.

And seven overs after tea the wicket-keeper completed his second century of the season with a single off Brown.

But the resilient left-hander was finally dismissed eight overs later when he edged the veteran Klusener to Northants captain David Sales at first slip.

Glamorgan’s innings was brought to a close two overs later when Huw Waters was run out by Rob White for a duck with Andrew Davies stranded on 49 not out.

Northants made quick inroads into the Glamorgan total thanks to Stephen Peters (40) and Andrew Crook (21).
