Oliver Newby returned career-best figures of 5-69 runs as Gloucestershire bowled Northamptonshire out for 349 on the third day of the LV County Championship Division Two match at Bristol.
The 23-year-old Lancashire seamer, who is approaching the end of a month on loan at Gloucestershire, added three victims to his two the previous day, giving him a five-wicket haul in a first-class match for the first time.
David Sales progressed from 99 not out overnight to 148, while Andrew Hall contributed 58 and Johann Louw 46.
By the close Gloucestershire had replied with 129 for two, Kadeer Ali making an unbeaten 63.
After another delayed start because of a wet outfield, Northamptonshire resumed on 212 for five looking to cash in on improved batting conditions and earn the bonus points to improve their promotion bid.
They were aided by some woeful Gloucestershire fielding as Hall was dropped twice on 47 by Will Porterfield at gully and Kadeer at midwicket, both off Newby.
Sales had needed only five balls to hit the boundary which took him to his 23rd first-class century, made off 152 balls and containing 13 fours.
But he too had a life on 121 when home skipper Jon Lewis spilled a low chance at mid-on off Ian Saxelby.
It was Newby who broke through with the total on 255, ending a stand of 141 by having Hall caught at mid-on by Steve Kirby just before lunch.
Johan van der Wath departed without scoring when he slapped Kirby to gully, where Chris Taylor took a sharp catch.
But Sales and Louw took Northamptonshire to a third batting point before Sales’ 213-ball innings was ended shortly after he had received treatment on the pitch for a muscle problem. A tired looking pull shot saw him sky a catch to Kadeer at deep square-leg.
The 30-year-old had hit 19 fours in holding his side together after they had been reduced to 114 for five.
Louw hit a straight six off David Brown before being last man out, caught at cover off Newby with his side tantalisingly one run short of a fourth batting point.
In reply, Gloucestershire openers Kadeer and Porterfield put together an opening stand of 57 before Porterfield was caught behind off van der Wath for 26 trying to withdraw his bat.
Hamish Marshall skied a catch to Niall O’Brien off Hall having made only 11, but the stylish Kadeer reached his half-century off 86 balls, with seven fours.
