Martin and Maddy give Warwickshire advantage

Chris Martin took three wickets as Warwickshire enforced the follow-on

Middlesex look likely to suffer an innings defeat in the LV County Championship Division Two match against Warwickshire at Uxbridge.

The hosts lost their last seven wickets for just 75 runs and trail Warwickshire by 203 runs with 10 second innings wickets left.

Middlesex were bowled out for 170 in their first innings with Warwickshire’s Chris Martin (3-43) and Darren Maddy (3-23) excelling.

Only Ben Scott showed any kind of resistance on a day when 54 overs were lost to rain, scoring a quickfire 37.

Resuming on 70 for three overnight, Owais Shah - on 25 - was dropped at slip by Jonathan Trott in the third over of the morning, before rain intervened.

After 16 lost overs, Middlesex suffered a blow in the first over back when Shah fell for 42, trapped leg before wicket by Neil Carter.

In his next over Carter picked up the wicket of Eoin Morgan for 21 - Morgan looked to drive a ball that swung late, found the outside edge and the ball flew to first slip where Trott snapped the catch.

Scott played a delightful late cut to bring up the 100 for the hosts in the same over but with the score on 109, Tim Murtagh became the sixth wicket to fall.

Looking to trying to force the ball through the off-side, Murtagh (two) only succeeded in giving Tony Frost a simple catch behind the stumps off the bowling of Chris Woakes.

A further 44 runs were added between Scott and Murali Kartik with Scott continuing to dominate the bowling with some superb shots either side of the wicket.

However, three balls before another interruption Kartik skied a dismissal to extra cover after scoring 17.

Scott then smashed the first ball after tea over square leg for four, but with the score on 164, Alan Richardson (six) was the eighth wicket to fall when he fenced at an outswinger from Maddy and Ant Botha took the catch at third slip.

Steven Finn did not last long as he fell in the 61st over, deceived by a full-length delivery from Martin and given out leg before for a single.

Two overs later Scott was the last man out when he was caught in the deep off the bowling of Martin by Navdeep Poonia, following a top-edge pull.

Following on, Middlesex began their second innings much more confidently with Nick Compton striking a couple of boundaries as the hosts finished the day on 20 without loss.
