Nottinghamshire denied result

Samit Patel

Samit Patel was left highly frustrated as the rain set in

Rain ruined the chances of there being any definite result from the LV County Championship Division One match between Somerset and Nottinghamshire at the County Ground in Taunton, where only 49 balls were bowled during the whole day.

In overcast conditions, play commenced on time with the visitors on 63 for three and knowing that heavy rain was forecast, Samit Patel and Andre Adams wasted no time in chasing the 149 remaining runs needed to clinch victory.

Patel pulled the fourth ball of the day - bowled by Andrew Caddick - which was just short of a length, to the square-leg boundary to declare the intent of the visiting batsmen.

The overnight pair gathered their runs at any opportunity and the 100 came up off the first ball of the seventh over of the morning, which went for four leg-byes.

Adams hit the second delivery of Caddick's over to the fine-leg boundary, but next looked to have been caught by Peter Trego at long-off, but before he could celebrate the fielder realised that umpire Nigel Cowley had called a no-ball.

Adams lifted the fourth ball over the midwicket for six, but Caddick had the final say when he sent the nightwatchman's leg stump cartwheeling as he tried to hit another boundary off the last ball.

The score had moved on to 125 for four, all but doubling the overnight total, when at 11.40am - after 8.1 overs of play - the rain set in and the players left the field.

Despite a couple of attempts they did not return and the umpires finally abandoned the game as a draw at 4.45pm.
