Nottinghamshire’s batting woes at home continued as Yorkshire dismissed the hosts for just 213.
Despite 58 from opener Matt Wood and 45 from Adam Voges, Notts collapsed to lose their last four wickets for one run in 18 balls after tea, with Yorkshire’s Rana Naved-ul-Hasan. picking up 3-63.
But the swing-friendly conditions which have prevailed at Trent Bridge this season meant the visitors were themselves in trouble at the close having reached 72 for five, still 141 behind.
Charlie Shreck and Mark Ealham both claimed two wickets to tear through the Yorkshire top order, with youngster Adam Lyth making 22.
Notts have claimed only six batting bonus points from a possible 25 at home this season and will need to improve their form sharply if they are to maintain their challenge in Division One of the LV County Championship.
Bilal Shafayat, called up in favour of the struggling Will Jefferson, fared little better as a lifting ball from England paceman Matthew Hoggard was edged to Tim Bresnan at second slip in the third over of the day.
Wood and Mark Wagh survived for an hour before Naved found a gap in Wagh’s defences to bowl him for a sprightly 33, with the Pakistan international removing Samit Patel lbw in his next over.
Former Somerset opener Wood brought up his third half-century of the season with a leg glance for four but became Naved’s third victim soon after lunch with an edge to wicketkeeper Gerard Brophy as he looked to play defensively.
Graeme Swann played patiently for his 27, adding 59 for the fifth wicket with Voges, but then edged behind off Deon Kruis.
Voges got a leading edge to the returning Hoggard for another catch to Bresnan at short extra cover.
It only took four overs of the evening session for Yorkshire to finish off the Notts innings, with Mark Ealham edging Adil Rashid to slip and Chris Read giving Brophy his third catch.
Paul Franks was then run out in a mix-up with Andre Adams and Charlie Shreck only lasted five balls before giving a bat-pad catch to silly point.
Yorkshire were soon in trouble in their reply, Chris Taylor edging Shreck to second slip and Joe Sayers squared up by a ball which left him to depart in similar fashion.
Ealham claimed the prize wicket of Rudolph who fell lbw in the 21st over to an in-swinging delivery.
The former England man followed up with an identikit dismissal of Andrew Gale, while Lyth was removed by an excellent catch by Swann in the slips off Adams.
