Vaughan fails for Yorkshire

Former England captain Michael Vaughan fell for a duck before Yorkshire were left to cling on for a draw against Kent in the LV County Championship Division One match at Scarborough.

Yorkshire had struggled to finish off the Kent tail in their second innings and were left to chase 204 for victory, but when opener Vaughan went without scoring from 14 balls their prospects took a knock.

Whitby-born Adam Lyth made a breezy 52 but Yorkshire, second-bottom of the table, were eventually thankful for play to end as they finished on 175 for nine, just 29 runs behind.

Amjad Khan and Robbie Joseph each claimed three wickets as Kent almost claimed a dramatic victory.

Another draw came at Hove, where Nottinghamshire went top of Division One after taking 12 points from their draw with Sussex.

Sussex batsman Murray Goodwin frustrated the title-chasers with a brilliant century.

The home side began the final day on seven without loss in their second innings, still 212 runs short of making the visitors bat again.

But they refused to buckle and reached 243 for three before the game was declared drawn, with Goodwin reaching 101 not out.

Barely any less important than Goodwin’s knock was the innings from opener Michael Yardy, who dug in for a patient 93 before his was the third wicket to fall, with Sussex by that stage having edged ahead of Nottinghamshire.

Lancashire and Surrey predictably saw no play again as their match, which never got started, was declared a draw with both sides taking four points.

The teams were frustrated by the conditions under foot at Blackpool's Stanley Park ground, where all four days of the match were washed out.

Surrey are still rock-bottom and Lancashire have been plunged into a relegation battle after five games without a win.

In Division Two, Northamptonshire fell agonisingly short of victory against Glamorgan at Wantage Road.

Glamorgan were battling to avoid an innings defeat for much of the final day, and they achieved their aim but with little to spare.

Jamie Dalrymple made a measured 74 and Mark Wallace added 43 as Glamorgan were all out for 238 second time around. England spinner Monty Panesar claimed four wickets.

That left Northamptonshire needing 38 for victory but they could only reach 28 for three by stumps, with Alex Wharf claiming all the wickets.

The anticipated draw between Warwickshire and Derbyshire materialised at Edgbaston.

The home side reached 241 for four in their second innings, with Darren Maddy making 138, before their declaration signalled the end of the match.
