Ben Harmison overshadowed older brother Steve by claiming four wickets as Durham bowled Surrey out for 220 on the first day of the LV County Championship Division One match at Guildford.
Ben returned figures of 4-27 before Surrey hit back with Jimmy Ormond taking two wickets – including that of Shivnarine Chanderpaul – and Jade Dernbach another to leave Durham on 44 for three and the match in the balance.
Harmison junior claimed 3-4 in 19 balls to wrap up the Surrey innings as the hosts lost their last six wickets for just 21 runs.
He was well supported by Liam Plunkett, with 3-49, while Steve took 2-31 off 17 overs.
The only batsman to make a contribution of note was opener Scott Newman, who 113 from 183 balls with 15 fours and a six with only Matthew Spriegel (35) and Usman Afzaal (15) making into double figures.
The day got off to a bad start for Surrey with Mark Ramprakash pulling out in the morning with a stomach upset.
Jon Batty assumed the captaincy of a side also missing Saqlain Mushtaq (finger), Matt Nicholson (knee), Pedro Collins (side) as well as long-term absentee and club captain Mark Butcher.
Ramprakash’s absence means he will have to wait a while longer for his 100th first-class hundred, and Newman showed him what he was missing on a good track by bringing up his half-century in 72 balls.
Opening partner Stewart Walters was unluckily dismissed in the 22nd over for eight when he appeared to lose sight of a slower ball - in an inadequate sight screen - and was lbw to Ben Harmison.
Newman remained untroubled and, with the help of Spriegel and Afzaal, took Surrey to 190 for four at tea before the sun went in and the ball started to swing. They then collapsed to their lowest first-innings total on this ground since 1999.
Newman was sharply caught by Michael Di Venuto, diving to his left at second slip to cling on to the ball two-handed, and the last five Surrey batsmen managed just three runs off the bat between them.
Plunkett had Chris Jordan caught behind and picked up his third wicket when Chris Schofield had a wild swing which went to wicketkeeper Phil Mustard before Ben Harmison wrapped up the innings.
However, Durham’s position of superiority was quickly undermined as Di Venuto edged Ormond behind and Mark Stoneman was yorked by Dernbach.
Ormond then claimed the prized wicket of West Indian Chanderpaul, who only joined up with the county on Tuesday.
