Notts name fitness coach

Nottinghamshire have appointed a dedicated strength and conditioning coach for the first time.

Kevin Paxton, who previously worked with Sheffield United Football Club for eight years, will aim to improve the squad’s physical training when the players return for pre-season training on March 5.

Paxton will also work with Notts’ England players - Ryan Sidebottom, Graeme Swann and Stuart Broad - to make sure they are following the ECB’s prescribed fitness programme.

He said: “I’ve always had an interest in cricket and am excited by the prospect of working with a different type of athlete and sportsman.

“Cricket is a good, honest sport with players who are disciplined and train well. Footballers are dedicated professionals but in cricket there’s a much greater opportunity to work with individuals and help them progress.

“As far as I’m concerned Notts are one of the top three teams in the country, so this is a terrific opportunity for me and a great career move.”

Physiotherapist Craig Smith and assistant manager Wayne Noon have previously handled the squad’s fitness programme but will now be free to concentrate on other duties.

Notts director of cricket Mick Newell said: “Having Kevin working for us puts the whole club on a more professional footing.

“We had lots of applications from across the sporting world and many were of a high standard, but he stood out as the best man for the job.

“He will be responsible for managing the fitness programme of players from the academy upwards, as well as working closely with Craig on the rehabilitation of injured players.

“And Kevin can also make sure that our England players are following the appropriate fitness programmes supplied by the ECB.”
