Northants will have a new captain for the 2008 season after David Sales decided to step down.
The batsman will continue to play for his original county.
Sales took over from Mike Hussey in 2004 and maintained consistent batting form while in charge, culminating in 2007 with 1384 first-class runs at an average of over 55.
He also surpassed 10,000 career first-class runs during the season in which he was the second top scorer in Division Two of the LV County Championship.
Sales said: “It was a difficult decision to make as I have enjoyed enormously my time as captain, but I feel the time is right to provide the opportunity for the club to choose someone else to have the privilege of leading the side.
“Of course I will give whoever is selected my full support and I am looking forward to the new season and helping the club towards challenging in all competitions.”
Northants’ board will consider Sales’ successor at their next meeting.
