David Hemp batted without alarm before the rain came

Warwickshire had something to smile about when their game against Glamorgan was abandoned at Edgbaston.

A point was sufficient to confirm the Bears’ position at the top of the Midlands/West/Wales group and guarantee a home tie in the Twenty20 Cup quarter-finals.

Glamorgan made the most of what play was possible. David Hemp and fellow opener Richard Grant batted through steady rain to reach 79 without loss before umpires Nigel Bainton and Jeremy Lloyds took the players off after 8.4 overs.

Grant was given his first county appearance of the season after scoring two centuries in second-team cricket.

Making the most of his opportunity, he matched Hemp shot for shot as Chris Woakes and Tim Groenewald conceded five boundaries in the first two overs from the City End.

Hemp then stepped up the pace with two fours and an imperious drive over extra for six in Groenewald’s second over but Grant was not to be outdone.

He welcomed Neil Carter into the attack with two fours and then smashed a six over mid-wicket on the appearance of left-arm spinner Ant Botha.

Frustratingly for Glamorgan, the weather worsened and brought proceedings to a close with Grant unbeaten on 39 from 23 balls and Hemp 38 not out after facing 29 deliveries.

Both Twenty20 meetings between the teams this season have now been abandoned and for Glamorgan this was their fourth “no result” in nine games.
