Derbyshire all-rounder Graeme Welch is expected to miss the first half of the season after undergoing a calf operation.
The 34-year-old, who captained the side last year, sustained the injury during pre-season training in February.
Though he considered avoiding surgery, he has been advised by a specialist that going under the knife is the best option.
Director of cricket Dave Houghton said: “This is obviously a big blow to both Graeme and the club but we have discussed all the options available and, by having the operation, this will give him the best chance of not just getting back this season, but also extending his playing career.
“I fully expect Graeme to come back as strong as ever and add a fresh impetus to the squad when he does return later this year.
“Fortunately, we have strengthened the squad significantly over the last two years and we are in a position to be able to cope with an injury to a key player, whereas in previous years we would have struggled.
“This will give an opportunity to other players like Kevin Dean, Tom Lungley, Wayne White, Simon Cusden and Boyd Rankin to fight for the extra place in our side and make it their own. We have good competition.”
Welch will remain involved with the squad and assist with coaching at the County Ground during his rehabilitation.
