Player profiles - England ODI v Sri Lanka

Paul Collingwood (capt, 26/05/76)

The England captain has endured mixed results with his new-look one-day side since taking over from Michael Vaughan in June. Collingwood is a a fiercely competitive player who leads from the front with his dynamic fielding, pugnacious batting and nagging medium pace bowling.

James Anderson (30/07/82)

Showed signs during the recent Test and one-day series against India of blending his undoubted wicket-taking abilities with a control which has often been lacking at times. Anderson can be expensive but should be a particularly potent threat with his ability to swing the white ball.

Ian Bell (11/04/82)

Capable of batting anywhere in the top six, Bell has performed consistently enough to dispel doubts over whether his game was suited to one-day cricket. An aesthetically pleasing batsman who has only one ODI century and should be looking to start to convert good scores into big hundreds.

Ravi Bopara (04/05/85)

Talented all-rounder who almost pulled off a dramatic victory for England in the 2007 World Cup against Sri Lanka with a brilliant run-a-ball 52. Another excellent fielder, he is able to vary his pace well when bowling and can be difficult to score off.

Stuart Broad (24/06/86)

Confident young seamer who has one eye on England's number eight batting position in the Test and one-day squad. The tall 21-year-old has huge self-belief and has signed with Nottinghamshire for the 2008 season to enhance his international aspirations.

Alastair Cook (25/12/84)

A stylish left-handed opener with a simple approach to batting but is yet to convince on the limited-overs stage despite enjoying considerable success during his embryonic Test career. Made his maiden one-day hundred against India in the summer and could be designated the role of anchoring the innings.

Dimitri Mascarenhas (30/10/77)

Born in England and of Sri Lankan heritage Mascarenhas will be relishing the chance to play against his parents' homeland. Proved his match-winning potential with the bat, slapping five sixes in a single over from Yuvraj Singh at the Brit Oval, and has impressed with the ball.

Phil Mustard (wkt, 08/10/82)

Played every match of Durham's 2005 promotion season. Made 800 runs last year, including two centuries in the County Championship and hit 49 off 38 balls to as Durham beat Hampshire in the final of the Friends Provident Trophy. Called up after a finger injury ruled out regular wicket-keeper Matt Prior.

Monty Panesar (25/04/82)

Orthodox left-arm spinner who offers England control, flight and variation as well as the ability to take crucial wickets during the middle overs of the innings. A hugely popular player whose fielding inadequacies have been hugely exaggerated, and he is improving with the bat all the time.

Kevin Pietersen (27/06/80)

A class act in any form of the game, Pietersen has all the shots in the book - and a few that he has manufactured himself. A confident match-winner who would walk into any international side with an average in the 50s and a strike-rate just below 90.

Owais Shah (22/10/78)

After a see-saw start to his England career the stylish batsman seems to have finally secured his place in England colours. Shah has long flattered to deceive but possess the ability, temperament and attitude to succeed and is starting to add consistency to his game.

Ryan Sidebottom (15/01/78)

Left-arm seamer who bowled with sufficient control upon his Test return against the West Indies to become a member of the one-day squad. Consistently puts the ball on the spot and offers valuable variation with his ability to bring the ball back into the right-handers.

Graeme Swann (24/03/79)

An extrovert off-spinner who is not afraid to give the ball a real tweak, as well as being a capable lower middle-order batsman. Swann has made a solitary one-day appearance against South Africa in 2000 and is expected to provide a back-up option to Monty Panesar.

Chris Tremlett (02/09/81)

The tall seamer was called up to replace Andrew Flintoff, but deserves his place in the team after a career dogged by injuries. Eight wickets in eight one-day internationals does not tell the full story as Tremlett has troubled several world-class batsmen with his pace and bounce.

Luke Wright (07/03/85)

A medium-fast bowling all-rounder who is capable of playing some big shots with the bat, but is inexperienced at international level. Mixed performances in a handful of ODI and Twenty20 appearances for England and a tour to Sri Lanka will be the acid test of Wright's ability.
