Hampshire director of cricket Tim Tremlett believes newcomer Stuart Clark is itching for a return to action ahead of the new season.
The seamer starred in Australia’s 5-0 Ashes triumph over England during the winter, claiming 26 victims at an average of 17 in the series.
He is currently kicking his heels in the Caribbean, having featured in only one Australia’s World Cup games, against Ireland.
Tremlett admits the 31-year-old cannot wait to kick-start Hampshire’s challenge in LV County Championship Division One.
“I think Stuart will be looking forward to playing some cricket, that’s for sure,” Tremlett said.
“He’s twiddling his thumbs a bit and wants to get some match practice rather than just bowling into the nets.”
Clark has agreed a deal to stay at the Rose Bowl until the middle of June, but Tremlett claims he could return to Hampshire if his switch is a success.
“Stuart will be available to us after the World Cup and will stay until the third week of June,” Tremlett added.
“There is the possibility he’ll have to return to Australia, but he might come back later on.”
In a bid to improve on last year’s third-placed finish in the championship, Hampshire have also recruited Michael Lumb from Yorkshire.
Another major change sees captain Shane Warne playing full-time, after his international retirement over the winter.
The legendary leg-spinner has been on the sidelines since the final Ashes Test, which ended on January 5.
But Tremlett is confident there will be no signs of rustiness when Warne swings back into action.
