Jhulan Goswami proved to be the scourge of England's women for the second day in succession as India opened up a slight advantage in the first npower Test at Grace Road.
The tourists' vice-captain, who took 3-46 to help bowl England out for 223 on the first day, hit a Test-best 69 that took India ahead.
They ended the day on 238 for seven, a lead of 15, although their delight was tempered somewhat by the dismissal of Amita Sharma to what turned out to be the last ball of the day.
She was well held by Jenny Gunn off the bowling of Laura Newton, one of three England bowlers to take a wicket, while there were two apiece for Katherine Brunt and Charlotte Edwards.
Edwards removed Goswami after an innings spanning 228 balls and containing 10 fours, but not before the Indian had passed her previous highest score of 62.
Gunn also landed a telling blow with the ball, her dismissal of captain Mithali Raj for 47 ending a third-wicket partnership with Goswami worth 85, the most productive of the innings.
