Australian fast bowler Michael Kasprowicz has announced his retirement from all forms of cricket.
The former Test paceman, who turns 36 on Sunday, will pull up stumps on a 19-year career at the end of Queensland’s one-day campaign later this month.
Last season Kasprowicz was limited to just nine deliveries as he succumbed to a series of back and groin injuries and he has also been hampered by calf and hamstring problems this campaign.
The veteran likened his last few weeks in professional cricket to leaving school.
“It’s been an amazing journey,” he said. “In some ways it’s a bit like year 12 in that there’s plenty of things to pursue and plenty of avenues to go down.
“The main issue for going is that it’s time to give back to my family, spend time learning to surf and do all the things I couldn’t do as a cricketer due to time contraints.”
Kasprowicz made his Test debut in 1996 and played 38 Tests for the Baggy Greens, taking 113 wickets at an average of 32.88, but never established himself as a regular.
However, his highlights include taking five-wicket hauls in England, India, Darwin and Perth and inspiring his team to a series victory over India in 2004.
Australia captain Ricky Ponting paid tribute to Queensland’s greatest wicket-taker, saying: “He had to reinvent himself a couple of times.
“He had a few injuries early on and loss of form. He changed his run-up and his action and when he got his chance back in the Australian side again he did a terrific job.”
Kasprowicz’s last game is expected to be at the Gabba on February 16 for the one-day clash with Western Australia.
